Calder Violin Case Story Ch 1

As well as cases for guitars we shall be designing and making cases for violins. So this post marks the beginning of the violin case story.

We've been discussing a Calder violin case for some time. Designer Angus Noble has made violins and cello's and we're consulting with other violin makers.

Here's a first sketch of the design.

This looks interesting. I'm currently after a new violin case as my current one (a Bridge that came with the fiddle) deteriorates. Perhaps you might be interested in my main criteria?

Needs to be small enough to take as hand baggage on an aeroplane.

Needs to be robust and protective enough that I can check it in as hold baggage if I really have to (e.g. in the current security restriction regime). Ideally it should be strong enough so I can use it as a makeshift stool to sit on when seating is lacking...

As light as possible.

Needs to have at least one shoulder strap, (and preferably two, so I can sling it like a rucksack when riding my bicycle).

Should be reasonably watertight - I don't want to worry about downpours when riding said bike.

Needs some space for rosin, cloth, spare strings, minidisk recorder, a small amount of sheet music and two bows.

The Bridge case fulfilled a fair number of these criteria, but isn't really robust enough, and the zips (particularly the outer compartment zip) are going. I've been saved quite a few times by the velcro fastner over the neck of the fiddle when the outer catch has come undone (or I haven't done it up).

I'm aware that many of these things are in opposition!

cheers, rog (at vitanuova dot com)

Thanks for writing to us Rog.
The Calder violin case will fulfill many of your criteria.
Small enough to take as hand baggage - yes.
Strong enought to check in - carbon fibre core will give great protection.
Light - carbon fibre is light as well as very strong.
Shoulder strap will be available as an option.
Water-proof - there will be an optional water-resistant slip case available which will go over the case.
Space will be enough for all the items you list.
We are fitting Swiss made zips made to military specifications.
