Calder classical guitar case #1 ready

Here are today's shots showing our classical guitar case in its final form. This is our second complete case design - another big step forward for us.

The classical guitar is large compared to the violin and it took Johan Ulvede many many hours to make the leather exterior and fit it out this case so elegantly.

After such a long time in the making I am very happy to see the real thing looks as elegant as I dreamed it would.

We will be running crush and drop tests on the two case designs in the next couple of weeks.

Classical guitar case update

The classical guitar case is near completion. We've included a neck support to the suspension system to increase the level of protection from shock. When the case is closed foam blocks in the lid hold the guitar securely into the base suspension pads.

Next week we'll fix in the lining, fit the storage box and this case will be complete.

Objects that Inspire - Valextra and Apple

Here are two more designs that have been influential in the development of our cases.

Design magazine Wallpaper led me to Valextra. My first visit to their website was a significant moment - discovering a company that combines immaculate leather craftsmanship with the purest of minimalist forms.

Valextra create luggage that lasts - once a design is in their collection it stays there for ever and only a few new pieces are created each year. It is my intention that Calder designs will have a similarly long life.

The Valextra Premier was designed in 1973 by Italian minimalist A.G. Fronzoni and is now in MoMA's permanent collection. The purity of the Premier sets a benchmark against which I measure my work. The Calder laptop case draws upon this Fronzoni design; I hope we have created something worthy of that connection.

Not handmade but designed with immense skill the Apple Powerbook is central to my life and an ongoing inspiration. The combination of materials, form and function seem pretty well perfect. Creating working tools that give great aesthetic pleasure is at the heart of my work.

Calder violin case first studio shots

Johan and I continue to work on fitting out the classic guitar case.

Today I took these shots in the big loft space next to Johan's workshop. I like my photography simple, showing the lines, the textures of the leather and velvet and construction detail.
